Liz Smith mentions Diahann in her latest column:

WHO WAS that glamorous creature spotted dashing in and out of NYC’s Waldorf Towers this week? It was none other than Diahann Carroll, a freshly minted 75 years young.

The actress/singer and all-around knockout was in New York filming her recurring role in the USA Network’s new hit series, "White Collar," which stars handsome Matt Bomer. Apparently, the producers like Miss Carroll so much they are going to introduce a storyline in which it is discovered her character was once a nightclub chanteuse. So, expect some smoky ballads amongst the crime fighting.

On September 14 and 15, PBS will air Diahann’s acclaimed one-woman show, "The Lady, The Music, The Legend," which was filmed last month at the Annenberg Theater in Palm Springs.

I didn’t have a chance to speak with Diahann this trip in, but I still remember last year’s interview. I must say, she has evolved into one earthy dame. She is funny, salty and makes light of her rather grandiose image. She loves being a star but she enjoys being a woman, too.

Still, Diahann frankly admits to being career and ego-driven and perhaps not always the world’s best mother. (In her autobiography she was unforgiving of herself, and revealed an insecurity that was astonishing for such a great beauty.)

You couldn’t knock this woman out of the ballpark with one of those enormous, ominous hats she used to wear on "Dynasty," when she proudly became "TV’s first black bitch!"
